His E-100 came from his local pawnshop which is exactly what he wanted the indie and underground genres were popular in Edmonton at the time, and their use of beaten-up and sometimes crappy guitars had grabbed his attention and he wanted to see what he could do with the ironic concept of creating music on such a torn-up instrument. These are not too easy to track down, but they are out there – with a maximum of 20 different Teisco guitars available across the United States on the Guitar Center website, around only 10 of which are similar with the Del Rey model that DeMarco has been using for years.

Teisco Del Rey E-100 (1960’s Japanese Guitars)įor a large chunk of Mac DeMarco’s history in performing and recording music, his go-to guitar has been a 1960’s vintage Japanese Teisco Del Rey E-100 electric guitar. I recommend this guitar for anyone looking to piece together a strong and reliable rig for a more reasonable price. I got my Squier Contemporary Strat at Guitar Center for about $350, and it is available on Amazon here for the same price with Prime shipping. Tying into DeMarco’s style, having this humbucker richens up the usual bass note that leads into the shrill, eerie melodies (listen to “Here Comes the Cowboy”). The HSS adds a deeper aspect to the sound produced typical humbucker pickups boost the low-end of the music which, in this case, accentuates the raw, shredding treble of the single-coil pickups. Since the 70’s Strat was broken, DeMarco was given an endorsement deal by Fender that he would use and promote the HSS Shawbucker Stratocaster – which has helped contribute to the shift in his musical style in the last three years or so. This 70’s Strat was an SSS configuration, with Fender’s Vintage-Style Single Coil pickups, which made it extremely sharp and bitey – a signature aspect of the vintage Stratocaster sound (just listen to Jimi Hendrix and his whining treble).

This is my personal choice for covering songs by Mac DeMarco – the specific amp I use helps me to achieve a close-to-spot-on DeMarco sound, which I will go on to describe in a later section. The Strat can emulate a plethora of music styles with the correct amplifier and effects, and is popularly played in every genre including country, funk, and even metal. The Stratocaster can be altered in any way with its 5-way pickup switch, which allows you to pick any mixture of the three pickups.
